Important letter, entirely handwritten and signed by the Admo”r of Gur, Rabbi Simchah Bunim Alter, author of Lev Simchah . Letters from the Lev Simchah – especially one of this length – are extraordinarily rare.
The letter before us was written using hints, as was the Lev Simchah’s way, but it could be that its brevity also stems from the topic of the letter, about which the Rebbe preferred to write using allusion. In the letter, Chareidi activist and diplomat R’ Binyamin Mintz is mentioned (later in life he was banished following his flouting the Council of Torah Sages). In his letter, the Rebbe refers to him using the term “our friend.”
Rabbi Simchah Bunim Alter of Gur [1898-1992] was the Admo”r of Gur and one of the leading Admo”rs of the previous generation. He was a son of the Admo”r, the author of Imrei Emet , and father of the present Gerrer Rebbe. He began to lead Gur Chassidut after the passing of his brother, the Beit Yisrael, in 1977, and he led his community until his passing in 1992. He was known as a tremendous wonder-worker, especially in matters of healing. Many times he would give instructions opposite those of the doctors’ opinion, and his words never went unrealized.
[1] leaf, 9×13 cm. approximately 52 words in the Rebbe’s hand and with his signature.
