A German certificate stating that a certain Jew – after it was determined that he had no assets, business nor profession, and was penniless, had no relatives and was supported by the community –was desperately in need of 40 gilders to pay his debts.
The document is from 1830 and signed in Hebrew by Rabbi Yisrael Ashkenazi, Rabbi of Tisminitz (1770-1841), rabbi of Hovniv and Tisminitz. His commendations appear in books by rabbis of his time alongside those of the “Chozeh of Lublin, ” Rabbi Naphtali of Ropshitz and the author of “Yismach Moshe.” His brother was Rabbi Moshe David of Toltshova, the great grandfather of Rabbi Yoel of Satmar.
