Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld is the author of the “Chatan Sofer” responsa. Among the outstanding Torah teachers of his day, he was born in Pressburg in 1835. His father was Rabbi Zvi Ehrenfeld, son-in-law of the Chatam Sofer. He served as the Head of the Beit Din in בעטלאן, וסיקסא and from 1877 he was the rabbi of Mattersdorf (where the Chatam Sofer served before him who died in 1883).
Of his childhood with his grandfather the Chatam Sofer it was said: “My father-in-law (author of the “Chatan Sofer”) was like the youngest child of the Chatam Sofer and he grew up in his beit midrash. [The child] entertained him daily, and sat upon on his grandfather’s lap. Before his birth the Chatam Sofer’s daughter was unable to have children for six years, and when her father heard of her sorrow, he promised that G-d would be merciful and he prayed for her. When he was born the Chatam Sofer said of him: “For this child, Shmuel, I prayed” (from the eulogy given by Rabbi Meir, son-in-law of the Chatan Sofer. See “The Chatam Sofer and his Disciples”, pg. 118).
Repaired tears on white margins. Very fine condition.
