Poster from the Politischer Bilderbogen series. Booklet no. 6, ‘Tales of Christ.’
The poster depicts Yeshu crucified in the town square and Jews joking, dancing and scorning by spitting and throwing mud at the crucified body. The poster is large and very detailed with many antisemitic motifs. For example, a Jew holding a sign reading “judas über alles” (“Judah above all” – paraphrasing the German anthem). There is a synagogue on the poster’s right with a flag hanging from it depicting the golden calf and the text: “geld reciertdie welt” (“money makes the world go round”). At the upper left corner, there is a group of Jews worshiping the golden calf, which is placed on bags of money.
In the margins of the poster, there is an illustration of Jews with knives drawn approaching screaming children, and much more.
Issues of the Politischer Bilderbogen series included antisemitic caricatures. Each issue constituted a large antisemitic caricature, folded. The other side of the issue was printed with antisemitic hate speech. The series was published in Dresden from 1892-1901, for a total of 33 issues. This is the sixth issue.
