Tractate Berachot and Seder Zeraim with commentaries. Printed at the Brothers Yosef and Ya’akov Proops Press. Amsterdam, 1752. Impressive copy. Original binding, magnificent and well-maintained.
Before us is the first volume, which initiates this magnificent edition of Sha”s printed by the renowned printers of the Proops family. The commentaries of the Maharsh”a and the Maharsha”l have been inserted here for the first time (in a special volume) as a part of the set of the Babylonian Talmud. This led to the fact that they are currently printed in all editions of Sha”s, whereas they were previously printed as books of novellae in their own right. There are many important approbations given to this edition, such as that by wonder-worker Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam, and the approbations of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman and Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, and also the approbation of the Va’ad Arba HaAratzot, which states that no other version of Sha”s is to be printed for 25 years.
This edition stood at the center of a large controversy about encroachment [השגת גבול]. Material about the controversy is included with this lot. The controversy between the rabbis of Amsterdam and the rabbis of Sulzbach, as whether the law is that this edition must be burned or whether it is a legitimate edition, is fascinating. These approbations before us relate to the previous edition, printed in Berlin, and explain how there is no encroachment in this case.
