Ministerialpass (diplomatic passport) of Walter Schulze Bernett, head of the Nazi Abwher in Holland. Bernett headed the Aquilar Campaign which rescued 176 Dutch Jews by claiming that they were spies for the intelligence agency. Bernett headed the campaign and even accompanied the Jews to ensure their safety. Bernett worked under the command of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris who opposed Hitler’s reign and was involved in attempts to stage a coup. He supported projects to rescue Jews, including Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn of Lubavitch.
This passport features a number of interesting details: Bernett’s occupation is listed as “Laborer” for the consulate. Includes twelve pages of signatures of currency exchanges and signatures of many border crossings, a diplomatic German visa that was issued in Hague and a Dutch diplomatic visa that was issued in Berlin.
In 2015, Bernett was nominated for the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
