Albrecht Durer’s und Lukas Cranach’s Randzeichnungen zum Gebetbuche Kaiser Maximilians I.; in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek zu Munchen Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German painter and printmaker using woodcuts, etchings and sketching; a polymath. He also worked in mathematics, geometry, silversmithing, music, writing, and in the scientific research of proportion, perspective and anatomy; he even designed aircraft. He is considered the greatest painter and engraver of the German Renaissance, and due to his versatility and innovations in fields of art and scientific theory, he was also known as “Leonardo of the North.” There is a leaf with a dedication to Otto Sosafiel at the beginning of the book, signed by Arthur Scholem, Reinhold and Erich Scholem, Gershom Scholem’s father and brothers, printers of this book.
