He was born in Bohosh, Romania, to Rabbi Yitzchak Friedman, founder of Bohosh Chassidism, son of Rabbi Shalom Yosef Friedman, grandson of Rabbi Yisrael Friedman of Ruzhin, founder of the Ruzhin dynasty, who was the grandson of the maggid of Mezeritch.
