Yosef Trumpeldor (1880-1920) was one of the founders of the Jewish Brigade, among the founders of HeChalutz and commander of the defense of Tel-Chai in 1920. Trumpeldor, a native of Russia, was the first Jewish officer in the Russian army, and even served in the Russo-Japanese war. He lost his left arm in that war. During the defeat of the Russian army in the battle over Port Arthur in January 1905, Trumpeldor fell into Japanese captivity. During his time in captivity, Trumpeldor occupied himself with establishing Zionist and Nationalist institutions and organizations for Jewish captives, including the Sons of Zion Captive in Japan association.
