Poster calling for a “national commemoration” in memory of Nachum Sokolov, on behalf of the Tel Aviv municipality, the JNF and the UIA. The memorial took place at the Levant Fair amphitheater. Tel-Aviv, 31/5/1936. Rare.
Nachum Sokolov was the fifth president of the World Zionist Federation. He passed away suddenly in London on 17 May 1936. The Levant fair was taking place in the Land of Israel at the time. Due to the huge Arab riots that occurred about two weeks before the opening of the fair, the Jaffa port was quiet, and the fair was small compared to the previous one. Multiple planned events were cancelled, and many visitors chose not to attend. Following the news of Sokolov’s untimely passing, and the low interest in the fair, the fair’s organizers decided to arrange a memorial event at the exhibition hall. It was decided that it should take place at the exhibition amphitheater on 31 May (approximately two weeks after his passing), despite the character of the exhibition not being suited to mourning assemblies. Speakers at the memorial included: Meir Dizengoff, Berl Katznelson and A. Goldstein. Noted in the margins of the poster: ‘Entrance to the amphitheater is free’ and ‘Entrance to exhibition sites as usual’ with the printed stamp of the Levant fair.
