Official letter sent to Rabbi Aryeh Levin with an entry permit to prisons, with his handwriting. Jerusalem, July 9, 1947.
[1] letterhead of the British Prison Services, signed by the commander of the prisoners. 20.5×16.5 cm. The back bears a note in the hand of Rabbi Aryeh Levin: [in Hebrew] official permit to visit Acre and Bethlehem.
The permit was issued a few weeks before the last execution of prisoners (Yaakov Weiss, Avshalom Haviv and Meir Nakar) who were condemned to death following the Acre Prison Breakout.
Rabbi Aryeh Levin (1885-1965) was a magnificent Jerusalem personality. He was a genius, proficient in all sections of the Torah and a benevolent father to all in need. He served as
mashgiach in Yeshivat Eitz Chaim and was known as the Rabbi of Prisoners because he visited them, encouraged them and took care of all their needs. He was particularly close to those condemned to death and visted them before their executions.
