Official community document, very beautiful and unusual, signed [twice in Hebrew and once in a foreign language] by the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Ashkenazi, av beit din of Tismenitz, brother of the sacred gaon Rabbi Moshe David of Tolcsva. [7 Tevet/28 December 1823]. Hebrew and German. Letters from him are extraordinarily rare.
Certificate in German stating that a Polish Jew declared – after law confirmed that he had no property, business, or any trade with which to support himself – that he has nothing. He lacks any relatives and is supported by members of the community. He is presently in desperate need of 40 gulden to cover his debts. Alongside the
av beit din of Tismenitz’s signature are additional official signatures and stamps.
