Rare personal invitation to the 100th birthday party of Sir Moshe Montifiore, signed personally, Ramsgate, England [1885]. Height 33 cm. Width 21 cm. Written on official paper with the symbol of the Montifiore family. The invitation was sent to the Leaders of Congregation Adat Yeshurun Brisk and signed personally by Sir Moshe Montifiore when he was nearly 100 years old. Added on to the official text of the invitation are the names of the rabbis invited and on the bottom of the page it is written: As a gesture of strong friendship… all the cherishers of Zion who long to raise up the flag of Israel. Montifiore’s signature is in English in big letters on the bottom of the page. Sir Moshe Montifiore (1784-1885), the famed benefactor who spent his whole life helping the Jewish Nation, merited to be honored when shortly before his death Jewish communities throughout the world celebrated his 100th birthday, producing pins and books in honor of the occasion. The philanthropist died at an old age in Ramsgate, England, a short time after this invitation was sent from there.
