Important and rare letter handwritten and signed by the renowned gaon Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld (maternal grandson of the Chatam Sofer), one of the leading rabbis and rashei yeshivahs in Hungary. Mattersdorf, 1880. Characteristic Yiddish and some Hebrew. Letters from the Chatan Sofer are exceptionally rare.
This important letter was sent to rabbeinu’s mechuteiniste (for reasons of propriety, her full name does not appear in the letter), the widow of the gaon of the Jewish people, the sacred tzaddik Rabbi Menachem [A”sh] ztzl”h, may [you] live a good, long and pleasant life.” Rabbeinu writes the letter in Yiddish, the language spoken by women at the time. Inter alia , Rabbeinu mentions “[your] beloved son, my son-in-law, none other than the renowned gaon Rabbi Meir A”sh. Rabbeinu concludes his letter with blessings: “I will sign off with a great blessing, a blessing for life and complete health … [your] in-law, who seeks the welfare of the entire family … the youth Shmuel son of …”
