Exceptionally rare intimate family letter with a segulah for healing, entirely handwritten by the “Gaon of Brashov” Rabbi David Shperber, author of Aspaklaria D’Anya , to his son, regarding the critical illness of his daughter-in-law – his son’s wife. Jerusalem, 1957. With an unknown saying in the name of the Chazon Ish. The gaon of Brashov’s extreme weakness is evident in this letter, when he writes to his son in broken, shattered script and with even more devastated words: “My heart is broken inside and my spirit is wounded … believe me, my dear son, that aside from the weakness due to my illness and age … my heart is dizzy and my strength has left me” … all due to his sorrow over his daughter-in-law’s illness. The gaon of Brashov tells his son about a meeting he had with the Chazon Ish, in which the Chazon Ish told him a saying (not known to be quoted in his name from sources other than this letter). The Chazon Ish said to him that he does not like hishtadlut ! In response to the gaon of Brashov’s question as to what can be done, the Chazon Ish responded, “Only recital of Tehillim will help.” If this was a generic saying by the Chazon Ish with respect to the superfluousness making efforts (and not an exception) this is a new insight into the Chazon Ish’s doctrine of faith as we know it. After this, the gaon of Brashov arranges the schedule of Tehillim for himself and for his son, giving charity and strengthening their faith as a segulah for his beloved wife’s recovery. The gaon of Brashov concludes his letter with blessings radiating with his love, “May the merit of my sacred ancestors come to our assistance.” Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi David Shperber .
