Sefer Rabot [Midrash Rabbah] on Bereishit, Shemot and some of Vayikra. Emmanuel Benveiste Press. Printed with the “Matnat Kehunah” commentary. The sheets of the leaves contain many dozens of glosses in ancient Oriental script, some quite lengthy. The content of the glosses was examined superficially and the writer has not been clarified, but it is clear that they were written by a Talmudic scholar of stature. Incomplete copy. The lengthy glosses are mainly in Shemot and onward, and were written over time with different quills, but they were apparently penned by the same author. There is an interesting gloss meant to hint at the gloss-writer’s identity (leaf 128b) which begins with the words “Know that all is the question of Avnimus HaGardi,” and concludes with “I explained all this in my book, P’ Derachim A”Sh.” Ancient owners’ signatures: “Yosef Ashkenazi” and “Shlomo ben Netanel.” In the copy before us: 176 leaves. 31 cm. Some of the glosses are cropped. Moderate condition. Aging stains. Worming perforations. Tears, some with lack. Taped reinforcement to title page without damage to text. New elegant leather binding.
