Unique Features: The title page bears the signature of Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Greishaber, and a gloss in his hand appears on leaf 7. The title page also bears the signature of his son, Rabbi Moshe.
Rabbi Yitzchak Eizik Greishaber (1745-1823) was a prominent Torah scholar of his generation. He served as rabbi in Pacs, Hungary. He was a disciple of the Noda B’Yehuda of Prague and corresponded with the Noda B’Yehuda and the Chatam Sofer regarding halachic questions. The Chatam Sofer wrote in a letter that his disciple Petachya asked him write a reference for him to HaRav HaGaon of Paks, Rabbi Yitzchak Greishaber, so that he would be willing to test his knowledge. Rabbi Gresihaber was noted for the battle he fought against Aharon Chorin regarding the kashrut status of the “shtril” [sturgeon] fish. Refer to Meorei Galicia , section 6, 31, where it notes that he was born in Krakow.
His son, Rabbi Moshe, was also known by the last name “Freund.” He was born in Pacs, in 1797, and studied under the Chatam Sofer who wrote about him with many honorifics and much praise. He called Rabbi Moshe his most senior student, the wondrous, the diligent … He is mentioned in the Shu”t Chatam Sofer . He was was rabbi in Jac. Refer to HaChatam Sofer V’Talmidav, 358-360.
