Rabbi Yisrael Freund was born in 1885 and studied under the Shevet Sofer. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe David Sofer of Sasregen, who was the son of Rabbi Chaim of Budapest. In 1911, he served as rabbi of Sasregen. He was killed in the Holocaust.
His son Rabbi David Yehudah Freund was a disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Yechezkiah Greenwald in Bonyhad and Rabbi Baruch Shaul Brach in Kasho. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth of Dej, and, after his second marriage, brother-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen, the Admor of Toldot Aharon in Jerusalem.
