Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012) was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania – an only child born to his parents after seventeen years of marriage. In 1924, his family immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and settled in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem. He assisted his grandfather, kabbalist Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv, with his book Leshem Shavo V’Achlamah. He studied Torah in various batei midrash in Jerusalem, and later became known as the posek of the generation and primary leader of Ashkenazic ultra-Orthodox Jewry.
