The author, Rabbi Pinchas Michael Grossleit [c. 1808-1890], was the rabbi of Antopol in White Russia and an author. Rabbi Mordechai Rosenblatt, the tzaddik of Oshmyany, sent a letter to Rabbi Grossleit regarding a series of dreams that began on Erev Yom Kippur. In these dreams, the Mahari ben Lev revealed himself and told Reb Mordechai that he was a descendant of the person who had publicly slapped him when the Mahari ben Lev convicted him during a beit din. He instructed Reb Mordechai to absolve his forefather’s sin by learning the Shu”t Mahari ben Lev. He was to purchase the work by the Rebbe of Antopol, since there was a Heavenly claim against the rabbi since he had not published his commentary on the Talmud. The Rebbe should use the money he received from the Shu”t Mahari ben Lev to print his commentary.
The endpaper bears the stamp of Reb Itzele Blazer [1867-1907] from after his move to Jerusalem in 1904. Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer was known as Reb Itzele Peterburger and was the foremost disciple of Rabbi Yisrael of Salant and a disseminator of his Torah.
