Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini [1833-1905] was Av Beit Din of Chevron and one of the great Later Authorities, generally known by the name of his book, Sdei Chemed . His name spread far and wide, and inquiries were sent to him from all over the world, as he wrote: “I have become very busy, not just with local matters; most have come from all corners of the world, and they are not distant, this one here, that one there, on all sorts of topics.”
The book Sdei Chemed is one of the most popular in Torah literature, and although it is voluminous, it has been printed in a number of editions. The work is something of a halachic encyclopedia incorporating current issues. It collects responsa from Ashkenazic and Sepharadic sages, arranged alphabetically, something unknown previous to this work.
