Beautiful letter entirely handwritten and signed by the Admo”r Rabbi Mordechai Leifer, av beit din of Chernowitz, of the Nadvorna dynasty. The letter was sent to the leaders of Agudat Ezrah in America to come to his assistance due to the high cost of living at the time. Budapest, on first day of Selichot 1942. We have not seen other letters from him.
The letter was sent in the midst of the European Holocaust. The Nazis had recently arrived in Hungary, and when this letter was written, there was still relative and deceptive quiet. The rebbe calls attention to the difficulties of the time, mainly the economic perspective, the high cost of living. At the end of the letter, the rebbe signs “May we merit the salvation of the Jewish people speedily in our days, may it be His will.”
