Background: Rabbi Yitzchak Kossovsky-Shachor [1887-1951] was among the gaons of Lithuania, established the Telz yeshivah, and was son-in-law of Rabbi David Shlomo Grodzinsky, Av Beit Din of Ivya, Lithuania (father of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky of Vilna). After his father-in-law’s passing, he was appointed to succeed him as rabbi in Ivya. Afterwards, he served as rabbi of Mariopol, Russia. In 1922 he moved on to serve as rabbi in Augustov, and in 1925 he served in the Vilkovishk rabbinate. He moved to South Africa in 1934, where he was appointed rabbi of the Association of Jewish Communities in Johannesburg and environs.
