Pleasant sermons and sharp words sweeter than honey, by Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz. Two parts. Vienna, 1818.
The inner part of the front binding bears an impressive portrait – copperplate work depicting Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz holding books in both hands and with a bookcase in the background. Inscription in the margins of the picture: “Image of the gaon Rabbi Yonatan ztz”l, av beit din and rabbi of the Ah”u communities.” Signed by the artist Jos Sher.
Rabbi Yehonatan Eybeschütz himself very much opposed portraits, but his admiring disciples kept their teacher’s portrait with their ritual items and in their residences, as attested by his prominent opponent, Rabbeinu the Ya’ave”tz in his book Hitavkut .
