In the introduction: “Given that since earliest times it has been a Jewish custom in every city … to select one day a year which does not fall on Shabbat as a dedicated day of fasting by all the people of the chevra kaddisha, young and old alike … to request forgiveness and atonement from the deceased for dealing with them over the past year.
