“May Hashem grant [you] success in all [your] activities to extract [your] honorable father, the gaon, shlit”a, and his entire family from the land soaked in blood”
Important letter from the rabbi of the entire Diaspora, the gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, with respect to the rescue of the sacred gaon Rabbi Shmaryahu Leib Medalia from the hands of the Bolsheviks in the land soaked in blood – Russia. The letter was sent to his son, Rabbi Hillel Medalia of Jerusalem. Vilna, 1934.
The gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer writes that he also wrote a letter about this to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, shlit”a, in Warsaw – this is referring to the Admo”r the Rayya”tz. Rabbi Chaim Ozer notes the Rebbe’s address in Warsaw: 7/9 Muranowska Street – the Rayya”tz’s well-known address in Warsaw. Rescue efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and his father, the sacred gaon Rabbi Shmaryahu Medalia, was cruelly tortured to death in prison during Stalin’s great purges.
Later on in the letter, the gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer writes that he is involved with “sending food packages via Targsin to all who ask.”
“Targsin” were food shops in Russia at the time that supplied basic foodstuffs for low prices in exchange for foreign currency.
