Interesting letter signed by Admo”r Rabbi Pinchas Menachem Alter, author of Pnei Menachem .
The letter is from 1969, during the period led by the Admo”r, author of Beit Yisrael of Gur. The letter is from the Admo”r, the author of Pnei Menachem , to community leader R’ Aharon Sarmper, requesting that he strengthen Ichud Mosdot Gur in the Land of Israel “which is comprised of ten institutions.” In our day, the “Ichud” comprises hundreds of institutions and its annual budget is approximately half a billion skekels. The Admo”r mentions Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev Feldman, the rosh yeshivah of Gur, and later an Agudah MK and chairman of the finance committee, who was going abroad as an emissary for the Ichud, and the Admo”r requests that he raise funds on Rabbi Feldman’s behalf so that he can return to his studies as soon as possible, “so that [his] time not be wasted; to consider time taken from Torah study.”
The Admo”r Rabbi Pinchas Menachem Alter [1926-1996] was the Admo”r of Gur and the president of Agudat Yisrael’s Council of Torah Sages. He served as the rosh yeshivah of Sefat Emet for many years before that, as well as a member of Agudat Yisrael’s Council of Torah Sages, and the chairman of Agudat Yisrael. He is known by the name of his book, as the author of Pnei Menachem . He lived simply, residing his entire life in an old 3-room apartment. He would spend much time in prayer accompanied by enthusiastic gestures. He is buried in the courtyard of the Sefat Emet yeshivah in the Machaneh Yehudah neighborhood of Jerusalem, next to the grave of his father, Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, author of Sefat Emet.
