Learned between the years 1878-1880 in the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, and from a young age was known to be extremely talented. In contrast with his father, there were no Jewish motifs in his pictures. In 1928 he received a gold medal in the art competition of the Amsterdam Olympics in the painting category. He is still considered to be an important and influential artist among the European impressionist painters of the beginning of the 20th century.
