Rare and important letter, entirely handwritten and signed by the Admo”r Rabbi Shlomo David Yehoshua Weinberg of Slonim, the “Yunger Rebbe” – one of the leading Admo”rim of his generation. Written just after his appointment as Admo”r, when he was yet an engaged young man! Sent to the gaon Rabbi Zelig Weinberg, son of the Birkat Avraham of Slonim. Baranowitz, 26 Tammuz, 1933.
The letter deals with collecting 160 lirahs from the heirs of Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev Botensky, who instructed them in his lifetime regarding charity. The Admo”r, as administrator of Kollel Reisin, grants power of attorney to his relative Rabbi Zelig Weinberg of Tiberias (son of the Admo”r, the Birkat Avraham of Slonim) to deal with it. In his letter, he writes that twenty lirahs should be sent to the Torat Chessed yeshivah in Baranowitz, forty lirahs to the home of his mother, the Rebbetzin (the Beit Avraham of Slonim’s widow), and the remaining hundred “to do with as he sees fit.”
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Admo”r Rabbi Shlomo David Yehoshua Weinberg .
This is a letter of rare importance written by one of the great Admo”rim while still an unmarried young man and already serving as an Admo”r (a rare matter in and of itself). The letter is written in an old-fashioned style, authoritatively, and bearing a rabbinic signature that befits the Admo”rim of Slonim. If not for the date, it would have been impossible to guess from the penmanship that he was a twenty-year old youth.
