After the title page, a print dedication by the author to the ‘philanthropists’ who helped print the book, in addition to the author’s vigorous discussion regarding the need for the book. This leaf is very rare and is not included in most copies of this edition. Not in the National Library.
Rabbi Nosson Shapira of Krakow was a Polish sage in the 17th century. He served in the Polish rabbinate and later immigrated to Jerusalem. He left on a fundraising mission after the pogroms of 1648-49 which impoverished the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem. He travelled to Italy and met Rabbi Moshe Zacuto who encouraged him to print this book. He was successful on his mission, and remained to serve as Rabbi of Reggio. His son-in-law, Rabbi Yechiel Puah and Rabbi Netanel Puah of Reggio. He authored “Tov Ha’aretz” and “Matzat Shimurim” and more.
