Written on the title page: Reprinted, proofread to the best of our abilities, and all poems vowelized. The first edition was printed during the period of the beginning of the printing process – incunabula, in Bresso in 1492, by Gershom Soncino, father of this printer. In the introduction to this edition, the son, the one who brought it to print, discusses errors that occurred in the first edition.
The magnum opus,
Machbarot Emanuel , is one of the first Hebrew-language literary works to be printed. Important classic work, translated into many languages, and many books and articles have been written about it.
The work includes words of rebuke alongside riddles and poems. The work includes 28 ‘
machbarot ‘. The last
machberet , number 28, is the most renowned of them all, ‘Machberet HaTofet V’HaEden, ‘ which depicts,
inter alia , the bitter fate of sinners and evildoers after their deaths.
