Ohr Somayach on the Ramba”m’s Yad HaChazakah, two volumes (of four), by Rabbi Meir Simchah HaKohen of Dvinsk, who is known by the name of this book, as the “Ohr Somayach.” The two volumes before us were published in the author’s lifetime. First edition of one of the most important works on the Ramba”m written in recent generations. The work is comprised of four parts; three were published during the author’s lifetime, and the last part was printed in Riga by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Zack, Av Beit Din of Riga, who also edited and published R’ Meir Simchah’s composition, Meshech Chochmah on the Torah. Rabbi Meir Simchah HaKohen of Dvinsk (1843-1926) was a tremendous gaon and tzaddik, a rabbinic leader of his generation and one of the leaders of Eastern European Jewry before the Holocaust. He served approximately 40 years as rabbi of Dvinsk (Denenburg, Latvia). During the period of his rabbinate in Dvinsk, he began to publish his monumental work, Ohr Somayach on the Ramba”m. This work was accepted into study halls and yeshivahs, already in his generation, as one of the important foundational works of Torah scholarship, and has since been printed in many editions.
