“To recall what came to my mind now during prayer” Two pages of Torah novellae [approximately 800 words], on the topic of kezaytim for seder night and related topics. Written by the gaon of Chassidic Poland himself, Rabbi Nechemiah Alter, son of the Sfat Emet of Gur. Sent to Hotel Russia. Undated and unsigned. Not printed. This is a final remnant of the Torah of the sacred gaon, Rabbi Nechemiah son of the Sfat Emet, who was known across the Chassidic world for his greatness in Torah. He served in the rabbinate of large communities in Poland. When the Sfat Emet yeshivah was established in Jerusalem, he was appointed its rosh yeshivah by his brother the Imrei Emet. Despite this, during the turbulent time of the terrible Holocaust, most of his many Torah novellae were lost and almost nothing remains, except for the small amount printed in Chiddushei Rebbe Nechemiah (Jerusalem, 1983). These rare leaves are not printed there. These insights were written in Hotel Russia, as appears at the top of the leaf, where the sacred gaon Rabbi Nechemiah of Gur apparently stayed over Passover, the topic of these insights. Rabbi Nechemiah may have stayed there due to his wife’s illness. It is worth noting that the gaon from Gur opened this manuscript with the interesting statement: “To recall what came to my mind now during prayer” – this is a ma’aseh rav that teaches a deep Torah concept in close to 800 words conceived by the sacred gaon of Gur in the middle of his prayers [in his words, “during prayer”], and he committed it to paper immediately, as noted in his words! (Similar instances are known among leading mitnagdim – and this is the first time we have come across a “Chassidic tale” of Torah novellae in the middle of prayer).
