He fasted for most of his days. He studied kabbalah together with Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant. He passed away in 1866. His epitaph reads: “A holy and pure person. At the age of eight, he started searching for Hash-m, and dedicated his days and nights to Torah and fasts and asceticism with dedication. His mouth never stopped learning day and night, and he merited to learn and to teach many disciples. He was both “Sinai and Oker Harim,” a chassid and humble man.” His sons included Rabbi David Beharan and Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Beharan (Beharan: In Hebrew, initials of “son of Rabbi Nachum”).
