Thick volume with copies of essays by Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Liadi, son of the Tzemach Tzedek, said and recorded from 1870-1872. Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Liadi’s essays were not printed.
Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1814-1880) was the third son of the Tzemach Tzedek. He was born in Lubavitch and was named for his grandfather, the author of Tanya , who had passed away about a year before he was born. During a childhood illness, the name Chaim was added. Three years after his father’s, the Tzemach Tzedek’s, passing, he moved from Lubavitch to Liadi and established the Chabad-Liadi Chassidut. It is said that when he reached Liadi, he recited the verse “and the fourth generation will return here,” alluding to his illustrious grandfather, the Ba’al HaTanya, who had also lived in Liadi. After his passing, the Chassidut split in half. Most Chassidim accepted the leadership of his son, Rabbi Yitzchak Dovber Schneersohn, author of Siddur Mahri”d, and a few of his Chassidim accepted the leadership of his brother-in-law, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Sirtschin (סירטשין) (descendant of the Admors of Radzymin, Poland, who had switched to Chaba”d), who transferred the center of the Chassidut to his city, Sirtschin. At the end of his life, he moved to Warsaw, Poland, where he passed away in 1905. There was no successor to the Mahari”d, and most of his Chassidim accepted the Rasha”b’s leadership.
