Yalkut Shimoni – midrashim by Chaza”l on Torah, Nevi’im and Ketuvim . Attributed to Rabbi Shimon, leading darshan of Frankfurt. Frankfurt am Main, 1687. Two parts in one volume. The first title page is illustrated. Thick book, large and impressive. Copy that belonged to the rabbinic Lvov (Lemberger) family dynasty of Pressburg, among the closest associates and disciples of the Chatam Sofer.
The title page bears an owner’s signature of Rabbi Avraham Hirsch Lvov, rosh hakahal of Pressburg and right-hand of the Chatam Sofer. The sefer was left to his son, the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Lvov, beloved disciple of the Chatam Sofer (not signed, but there is an indication of his ownership), and from him to his own son, the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Lemberger (Lvov), av beit din of Rosenau, signed on the front protective leaf.
The back protective leaf bears a handwritten notation by Rabbi Yitzchak of Bistritz attesting that he borrowed the sefer from Rabbi Shlomo Lvov. Another notation on the back flyleaf is signed by Rabbi Ya’akov HaKohen of Apta – apparently this is Rabbi Ya’akov HaKohen Weisenfeld, av beit din of Zoklikov. Many additional rabbinic signatures in foreign languages appear in the book (the foreign-language signatures have not been examined).
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of Rabbi Avraham Hirsch Lvov (known as “R’ Hirsch Lemberger”) , his son the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Lvov/Lemberger , his grandson the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Lemberger , and his great-grandson the gaon Rabbi Ya’akov HaKohen Weisenfeld .
