Letter with an inquiry from Rabbi Yisrael Meir Freiman, av beit din of Pilna and Ostrova, to his distinguished father-in-law, Rabbi Ya’akov Jukab Ettlinger, av beit din of Altona, author of Aruch LaNer , with a short reply from his distinguished mechutan in the latter’s penmanship. This responsum was printed in his sefer Bnei Tziyon Part III siman 176.
Content of the inquiry: astonishment at the statement by the author of Halachot Gedolot about the source of the punishment of malkot for eating neveilah and treifah – what passuk in the Torah is this learned from? The Aruch LaNer responds in brief, that “Your question is indeed a good one, I do not know what to answer …”
Rabbi Ettlinger’s son-on-law refers to his father-in-law as “Abba” in his letters, including in this one, “I ask, Abba, my friend … such is the request of [your] faithful son.”
