ELDEVOTO PEREGRINO VIAGE DE TIERRA SANTA. Travelogue to the Holy Land by Antonio De Castillo. Madrid, Spain 1656. Maps of the Holy Land and Jerusalem.
[26], 511, [19] pages. 24.5 cm. Quality paper. Italian.
The author was a Franciscan Monk sent to tour the Holy Land. The book includes a number of impressive maps. 1. Large, folded map of the Holy Land. 88:36. With 19 miniatures of Jewish motifs. Beautiful inset map engraving of Jerusalem. Map made by Tirinus Jacobus. Refer to Laor, 771.
2. Map of Jerusalem after its destruction, at the beginning of the Christian period. Large and folded. By Antonio de Castillo.
3. Map of Jerusalem during the ‘modern period’ – 17th century.
These two maps of Jerusalem are not listed by Laor.
Other tens of eye-catching copperplate engravings within the book. The large majority depict historic sites in Jerusalem. Including a small-folded map, pasted onto page 206, that opens out of the book! Historic book about Jerusalem printed in Madrid. Though it was printed by monks, it was still subject to Spanish censorship, and a number of lines on pages 225-226 were erased. Maybe these few words related to the Jewish faith. Very rare.
