Beautiful, lengthy letter covering two pages. Entirely handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Shimon Leibowitz, among the leading disciples of the Shevet Sofer, av beit din of Jóka, after which he was invited to serve in the lofty position of dayan of Pressburg in place of the av beit din , the author of Da’at Sofer . Pressburg, 1931.
Not only was the letter-writer one of the greatest rabbis and dayanim of his generation in Hungary, and a member of the beit din of the chief rabbi, the Da’at Sofer of Pressburg (there are rulings where both are signatories), but the recipient of the letter (the addressee) was also a leading gaon of Hungary and the person who later became the chief rabbi of the Land of Israel – Mara D’Ara Yisrael – the gaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, ga’ava”d of Jerusalem.
In the interesting first part of this Torah letter, the two geonim – disciples of the glorious yeshivah in Pressburg, discuss issues of kashrut . The dayan of Pressburg takes advantage of his close relationship with the av beit din of Jerusalem and he clarifies details of the kashrut of goods transferred from one place to the other. We will point out that the gaon’s handwriting is difficult to read, and there are words and even entire lines that have not been deciphered by us.
Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Shimon Leibowitz .
