I know him well, this is how he instructs his children
Important, beautiful and sacred letter handwritten and signed by the Chatam’s Sofer’s disciple, the renowned gaon Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer, av beit din of Paks. The letter was sent to his beloved son with guidance as to how to get through a rough period, and huge fatherly blessings for his son and his son’s children. [Apparently Paks, 19th century.]
Beautiful, complete letter from beginning to end, from the “ב”ה” blessing at the beginning of the letter through Rabbi Zussman’s full signature at the end, with an addition after the signature. The letter is very personal, from father to son. It is undated, and the son’s name is also lacking. We are unaware of the precise background to this letter, but it is written as a kind of father’s ethical will instructing his son as to how to get through life’s storms (especially during that period, with the beginning of the spiritual decline in Hungary). Towards the end of the letter, Rabbi Zussman blesses his son with warm fatherly blessings for him and for his descendants.
“Be sure not to become entrapped in the net of dispute … just … maintain a pure heart to serve Hashem. The most important thing is prayer to merit righteous children … Have faith in Hashem, don’t rush the hour. You are still young – why take a rabbinic position? Fill yourself with Sha”s and poskim – study in-depth and honor will come … as per the prayers of your father, who always prays for you. The small one, Zussman son of …” This is followed by a lengthy addition of blessings in Yiddish – almost the same length as the whole letter.
