Manuscript on parchment – two pages from Sefer Amudei Golah , more commonly known as Sefer Mitzvot Kattan – Sma”k . This is the important work authored by Rabbeinu Yitzchak of Corbeil. Characteristic Ashkenazic script. Ashkenaz-France, 14th century.
This passage contains most of section 89 (New York 1959 edition, pages 48-51). In some places there are differences from what was printed, occasionally significant differences. For example, in the printed version (New York edition, page 48), it states, “Rabbi Eliezer of Metz forbids, as does Rabbeinu Mayivra.”
Here in the manuscript, it reads: “Rabbi Shimshon of Metz [and Rabbeinu/Rabboteinu] [Ma]yura forbid.”
Sefer Amudei Golah – the Sma”k was one of the most common sefarim in Germany in the period of the Rishonim . The Chid”a notes the custom to copy it onto parchment: “He sent the sefer to everyone in the Diaspora to copy it … and as a result, there are many copies of the Sma”k on parchment in Germany … ” ( Shem HaGedolim, Me’arechet Sefarim 70). This sefer was printed three times in the 16th century! – aside from later printings.
