Touching letter full of love of the Jewish people from Rabbi Aryeh Levin to MK Esther Raziel-Naor. Jerusalem, 1950s?
The letter is written entirely in Rabbi Aryeh Levin’s calligraphic script, in block letters, and signed in his hand. The letter deals with the spiritual state of the settlements in general, and particularly that of the Ramat Raziel settlement named for her brother, the Irgun commander who was killed in Iraq on a military mission against the Germans. Rabbi Aryeh bemoans the spiritual condition of the settlements, with no minyan on Shabbat and no Jewish education. Rabbi Aryeh, although a member of Jerusalem’s most Chareidi community and the educational director of the Edah Chareidit’s Talmud Torah, Etz Chaim, relates to the secular youth forgivingly, and defends them: “I don’t denounce our youth, heaven forbid, because our generation is entirely a generation of aspiration and internal revival … several good characteristics are hiding in their hearts.”
