Lengthy and rare letter [3 pp], entirely handwritten and signed [twice] by the famous emissary and traveller Rabbi Ya’akov HaLevi Sapir, author of Even Sapir – one of the prominent personalities of his generation, whose discoveries and research established foundations that are significant to this day, both halachic and historic, including the Cairo genizah , the false messiah in Yemen, the status of Indian Jewry and more. Jerusalem, 1878. There are several book dedications known to have been written by him. However, to the best of our examination, letters from him have never before been offered at auction.
The letter is addressed to the renowned collector R’ Ya’akov Naftali HaLevi Fon Bimme (ינה”ל) of Amsterdam and they mention many important names from the period. The first part of the letter deals with expressions of appreciation and blessings for sending donations for the poor of Jerusalem. In this letter, Rabbi Ya’akov informed him that he distributed the funds to those for whom they were designated, etc. The second and third pages are Torah novellae, primarily comments on the sefer Netinah LaGer on Targum Onkelos by Rabbi Nattan Adler, av beit din of London.
