Letter on behalf of Rabbi Dov Kalisch of Skierniewice to rabbis in the Land of Israel, Shlomo Elberg and David Hersch Zilberstein. Lodz, [1938].
[1] the Rebbe’s stationary, with his stamp. 28×21 cm. Written and signed by Rabbi Yoel Naftali HaLevi Kaminetz, as per the Rebbe’s instructions.
The secretary mentions to the addressees that they must pay the Shem MiShimon yeshivah for receipt of the Shem MiShimon booklets published by the Rebbe. In addition, the Rebbe asks them to send him the eighth volume of Torah Shleimah which he paid for but has yet to receive.
Rebbe Dov Kalisch of Skierniewice, Rosh Yeshivah of the Shem MiShimon yeshivah, was the son of Rebbe Shimon. The yeshivah was established in Lowicz and moved with the Rebbe to Lodz. The letter describes the financial difficulties that increased with the yeshivah’s move: “And especially from when it moved from its location in Lowicz…the expenses also increased, and of course went higher and higher.” During the Holocaust the Rebbe was in Warsaw. It is told that his disciples gave the Nazis an enormous bribe to fly him out of their territory. The Nazis took the money, put the Rebbe and his family on an airplane, but brought it down on the way and murdered them.
Slight aging damage, folding marks, slight blemishes to the edges of the leaf. Fine condition.
